🇺🇸✨ Buncombe County Schools is thrilled to announce that Carrie Pratt, a teacher from Clyde A. Erwin Middle School, and her former student Sophia Nerenberg, now a sophomore at Martin L. Nesbitt, Jr. Discovery Academy, have been selected to represent North Carolina at the 2025 Young People’s Continental Congress!
This prestigious program, hosted by National History Day (NHD) and Carpenters’ Hall, brings together student-teacher teams from across the country to study America’s founding era in Philadelphia, the birthplace of American democracy. Sophia and Ms. Pratt will dive into primary source documents, visit historic sites like Independence Hall and the Museum of the American Revolution, and collaborate with students and educators from all over the U.S.
Only 27 teams were chosen nationwide, making this a huge achievement for Sophia, Ms. Pratt, and our entire BCS community! We couldn’t be more proud to see our students and educators leading the way in historical research and civic engagement.
This July, they’ll travel to Philadelphia for an immersive week of hands-on learning, capped off by drafting a joint declaration of their aspirations for American democracy, just like the original delegates of the Continental Congress did in 1774.
👏 Join us in giving a big congratulations to Sophia and Ms. Pratt for this well-deserved honor! We can’t wait to hear about their experience this summer.
