Each day, Kim Smith walks the halls of two Buncombe County elementary schools, offering support to students and families. As a school social worker at West Buncombe and Emma elementary schools, Smith plays a pivotal role in ensuring that every student has the resources and stability to succeed, both academically and personally.
"Kim Smith is a fierce advocate for students and families, ensuring they receive the support and resources they need to thrive," shared Brad Johnston, principal of West Buncombe Elementary. "She holds herself, parents, and teachers to high expectations, fostering a strong, collaborative environment that prioritizes student success. Through her compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment, Kim makes a lasting impact on our students' lives, helping them navigate challenges and reach their full potential. Her presence in our school creates a culture of support, resilience, and positivity that benefits the entire community."
With years of experience in the education field, Smith offers an inside look at her role—a position often misunderstood, but one she describes as critical to student and family well-being.
“We work to provide resources, connect parents with help, and make sure students have what they need to thrive at school and at home,” Smith said.
As a school social worker, Smith bridges the gap between education and social services, providing students with support when they face challenges such as poor attendance, homelessness, food insecurity, or mental health and behavioral struggles. She collaborates closely with teachers, counselors, and community organizations to ensure children receive the comprehensive care they need—whether it's securing clothing, arranging counseling, or helping families navigate financial hardships.
"Kim works hard to build lasting relationships with students and families," said Carla Shipman, principal of Emma Elementary. "She goes above and beyond to help families feel supported with the resources that they need. She is a great communicator and always has a smile on her face."
Over the years, Smith has witnessed countless success stories—families being reunited, students gaining access to mental health care, and parents finding the support they need to provide a stable, nurturing home.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a student get the help they need and watching them flourish,” said Smith.
As we celebrate National School Social Worker Week, it’s important to recognize the tireless work of social workers like Kim Smith, whose impact extends beyond the school building. Her dedication, compassion, and commitment to students and families serve as a shining example of how social workers make a profound difference in the lives of those they serve.
We are grateful for the service of all of our school social workers, and appreciate everything they do for the BCS family.
