A unique lesson is helping dollars make more sense to students at A.C. Reynolds Middle School.
The State Employees Credit Union (SECU) brought its “Reality of Money” activity to the school last week. Eighth graders selected different identities with various education levels, jobs, and credit scores. The customer profile also includes a marital status and number of children.
“This activity helps students see that although children are a blessing, they cost extra,” said SECU’s Maggie Whitcraft. “We hope this helps them see that decisions they make can have lasting impacts. We want to help them start out on the right foot, especially with building credit.”
Students visit several stations, including “entertainment,” “groceries,” “insurance,” “clothing,” and “transportation.” The goal is to have money left after visiting them all, which was more challenging than some students expected.
