The Buncombe County Schools Migrant Education Program has received a prestigious honor from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).

Migrant Education team members Liceth Sherlin, Yoanna Corea Argueta, Nancy Moore, Katie Hobbs, Blanca Heredia, and Wendy Acevedo-Lule were honored by NCDPI with the Continuous Program Improvement award. The recognition honors innovative support services and collaborative work with community organizations that provide access to high quality education opportunities and improve student outcomes.

“This recognition is not just a reflection of one person’s efforts, but a true testament to the incredible dedication of our entire Migrant Education Program Team, as well as our teachers, advocates, coordinators, community partners, and most importantly, the migrant families and students we are privileged to serve each and every day,” said Jeanann Yates, Federal Programs Director for Buncombe County Schools. “It is this team's mission to support our students and families through academic services, connecting families to vital resources, or simply being a consistent and trusted presence.”

The team was surprised with the award April 10 in Greensboro, with Superintendent Dr. Rob Jackson and Associate Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Reed in attendance.

“This team works tirelessly—late nights, weekends, and beyond—to ensure our students and families are seen, supported, and successful,” Yates added. “I’m absolutely thrilled that their dedication has been honored in such a meaningful way and recognized at the state level with this award.”
