On Friday, Dr. Jackson completed his eleventh full-day school visit; he spent the day at North Buncombe Elementary School (NBES). In 1989 NBES opened its doors to students following the consolidation of Barnardsville, Flat Creek, French Broad, and Red Oak schools. Later, Barnardsville Elementary reopened. NBES serves 572 students which are led by 101 passionate staff members.
NBES offers a variety of enriching educational experiences for students. They are proud to be a part of the Dual Language Spanish immersion program for grades K-4. Students enrolled in this program learn Spanish skills such as listening, reading, writing, and speaking. By the time students leave NBES they are bilingual in English and Spanish.
NBES provides students with many extracurricular activities such as Jump Rope Team, Chorus, Art Club, Gardening Club, Safety Patrol, and Battle of the Books. Opportunities like these open the door for students to become invested in NBES beyond the classroom.
“NBES is a special place that is full of heart,” said Principal Heidi Allison. “The NBES staff is proud to work at this community school that works to support the learning needs of each student. Everyone puts their whole heart into making connections with students, meeting diverse student needs, and planning meaningful learning experiences. Our mission statement is Growing, Learning, Succeeding, and we accomplish this through hard work, dedication, and love. NBES is a family, and we believe that by working together we can ensure that our Blackhawks soar!”
