The seventh graders at Charles D. Owen Middle School (OMS) recently traded in their classrooms for the great outdoors, where they headed to the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly for a day packed with adventure, discovery, and unforgettable memories. With the crisp mountain air filling their lungs, the students took on the high ropes course, climbing wall, and tested their skills - all while learning the true meaning of teamwork.
The high ropes course, towering above the forest floor, quickly became a test of courage. As students strapped into harnesses and climbed into the treetops, cheers erupted from below. Every shout of encouragement, “You’ve got this!” echoed through the trees, turning nerves into determination. Students who hesitated at first found themselves soaring through the obstacles, fueled by the support of their peers.
“This is a great way for our student team to get to know each other,” said math and social studies teacher James Sapp. “It also allows every student to take risks, which is important at this age. We can carry the skills learned here and apply them in class all year long. This year’s group of seventh graders are just absolutely awesome!”
By the end of the trip, the seventh graders returned not just with memories of thrilling challenges and beautiful views, but with a newfound sense of unity. Since returning to OMS, the students know that the power of teamwork makes even the toughest obstacles seem a little easier - and a lot more fun.
