A group of enthusiastic Enka High School (EHS) Latin students experienced an unique field trip filled with ancient history and art at the Ackland Art Museum on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.
Ten Latin students and Junior Classical League members, along with Latin teacher Abigail Lunsford, embarked on this adventure. The group saw art unlike anything they’ve seen before.
“For many of the students, this was their first time visiting any sort of art museum,” said Ms. Lunsford. “We participated in a guided tour with the curator at the Ackland Art Museum. Throughout both museums we discussed where art comes from, how it is acquired by museums, and how to look closely at art to learn more about the culture it comes from.”
This experience gave students the opportunity to connect with a piece of history they may not have seen before.
“I felt like I was able to understand classical art not only on a visual level but on a cultural level as well,” said Senior, Alana Shull. “I felt as though I am now able to observe classical art and understand the culture surrounding it.”
Ms. Lunsford said this field trip was made possible with help from the CAMWS Keely Lake Travel Grant. She hopes to provide this experience to students for years to come.
