In a heartfelt tribute to a cherished colleague, the Buncombe County Schools Transportation Department recently unveiled a memorial garden in honor of Assistant Director Mike Roberts, who passed away unexpectedly in April 2023. Mike’s profound impact on the department and the wider school system was, undeniable, marked by his dedication and warm spirit.
“Though his time with us was short, he took pride in his job and worked hard to connect with drivers and school administration to help support the overall transportation experience,” said Transportation Director Jeremy Stowe.
Family members, friends, and coworkers came together to celebrate Mike’s memory by planting a garden filled with his favorite flowers, lilies. The serene space not only serves as a place of reflection but also stands as a symbol of Mike’s enduring influence. The highlight of the garden is a special plaque, which simply states, “Planted in memory of Mike Roberts,” serving as a timeless reminder of his contributions.
As the lilies bloom each season, they will bring not only beauty to the surroundings, but also a sense of ongoing connection to a beloved member of the community, who is sorely missed.
