Student excited about a hands-on activity in class.

At Enka Intermediate, there is one classroom students cannot wait to visit - the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) room. Teacher Thomas Campbell, with his curious mind, has made the space a hub of discovery, creativity, and hands-on learning.

Group of student eagerly raising their hand to answer a question.

The room is filled with an assortment of items just waiting to be explored. This semester, the students learned about the circulatory system. Students gathered around as Mr. Campbell used a life-like model of the heart to give a first hand look at how it operates.

Students shocked to discover how the heart works.

Opportunities such as this are why fifth grader Leslie looks forward to Mr. Campbell’s class.

“We get to have a lot of fun in this class,” she said. “I have learned a lot of new things because of Mr. Campbell.”

Mr. Campbell’s STEM class is more than facts and diagrams - it’s something you can see, feel and understand.

“A lot of STEM is hands-on exploration where students have to use their creativity and imagination to solve a problem, and very often there are no right answers,” said Mr. Campbell. “I strive to bring learning to life, because it could be something a child will never forget.”
