Students looking for insects at the North Carolina Arboretum

On a crisp fall day, students from Buncombe County Schools Virtual Academy (BCSVA) explored nature at the North Carolina Arboretum.

Students from Kindergarten to sixth-grade learned about the world of arthropods. An arthropod is an insect that has a segmented body much like that of spiders and ants. Students dug in the dirt and flipped over logs in order to discover different species.

“For all of us at BCSVA, we love to get together in person with one another as much as possible,” said Third/Fourth-Grade teacher Kim Ransom. “The Arboretum is a great place for us to connect with one another and with nature. The kids get to run around, and the educational opportunities are endless.”

While learning is primarily facilitated in an online environment, BCSVA works to enhance that virtual learning with engaging, in-person activities. Students’ next adventure is to a local corn maze.
