On Thursday, Dr. Rob Jackson completed his eighth full-day school visit; he spent the day at Owen Middle School. Owen is located in the beautiful Swannanoa Valley. The school was founded in 1991 with the consolidation of Black Mountain Middle School and Swannanoa Middle School. The school currently serves about 419 students with 76 staff members. OMS proudly wears maroon and gray and is the Home of the Warcolts.
Students may participate in a variety of clubs including E-Sports, Community Club, Dungeons and Dragons, Student Government, Soccer Club, Frisbee Golf Club, and Battle of the Books. Also, middle school opens doors for students to explore world languages, dive into robotics and medicine with Project Lead the Way Classes, and participate in a variety of athletics!
“Owen Middle is a special place within Buncombe County's Swannanoa Valley,” said Principal Bradly McMahan. “With its rich tradition and community connections, Owen Middle remains a foundational piece of our community. Whether it is athletics, extracurricular clubs, activities, or community engagement, students and staff never miss an opportunity to show off our maroon and gray. We are charged with the education and future of our beloved Valley. This is not a responsibility we take lightly as we strive for excellence each day. The beauty of our campus sets the scene for learning, social-emotional growth, and the development of 21st-century skills that will last a lifetime.”
