Estes Elementary brought the holidays to the classroom this year, engaging in all sorts of festive activities that taught real-world skills in the process.

Third grade students held a Holiday Market, designed to teach students about commerce and money-skills. Students from each class made various holiday crafts, ranging from paper snowflakes, surprise-wrapped candy bars to ornaments, reindeer candy-canes and more. Students then sold the wares in a market to each other, using the “money” generated from their sales to purchase other student’s wares. Allowing for creativity and teaching about hard work and commerce at the same time.

Students from Ms. Donalyn Small’s class got to flex their debate, public speaking, and acting skills while learning about different holidays with a lesson called “Holiday vs. Holiday”. Students dressed up in outfits inspired by various holidays and engaged in lively debates or skits they had written about the traditions, history and iconography of various holidays. There was Christmas vs Hanukkah, Halloween vs Easter, 4th of July vs. Thanksgiving, and many more.

Holiday fun wasn’t just for the kids - Estes students also got to enjoy a holiday lunch with their family and friends. A festive spread served with a smile by the cafeteria staff was enjoyed by Estes family members of every age, some sporting holiday sweaters and hats.
